Our Legacy. Our Love.   Our Calling.

Since 1787, First Baptist Church of Trenton has stood as a spiritual home and community anchor in the heart of Trenton, New Jersey. What began with Rev. Peter Wilson’s bold preaching over 230 years ago became officially organized in 1805 as the “Trenton and Lamberton Baptist Church.” Through trials—including a devastating fire in 1953—and triumphs like rebuilding and renewed purpose, our church has remained faithful to God’s calling.

Rooted in tradition yet relevant for today, we are a multicultural, multigenerational family of believers committed to praising God, loving people, and transforming lives. In 2015, we embraced a new chapter by calling our first African American pastor, Rev. Calvin Nadir Powell, whose passion for community engagement and service continues to guide us forward.

We live our mission—“Disciples Making Disciples” (Matthew 28:19-20)—by creating space for healing, hope, and service in South Trenton. Whether you're seeking purpose, connection, or a place to serve, we invite you to journey with us as we build God’s Kingdom together—for the good of the world.

Come as you are. Grow with us. Serve with us. Be part of the story.

What We Believe

We are a Christian community deeply rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ and the authority of the Bible. Our beliefs emphasize individual faith, local church autonomy, and a personal relationship with God through Jesus.

  1. Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
Baptists believe that salvation is found through faith in Jesus Christ, who lived a sinless life, died for humanity’s sins, and rose again. He is the only way to a restored relationship with God .

  2. The Bible as Final Authority
Baptists affirm the Bible as the inspired Word of God and the ultimate authority in all matters of faith and life .

  3. Believer’s Baptism by Immersion
Baptism is for believers only and is done by full immersion as a public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ.

  4. Autonomy of the Local Church
Each Baptist church governs itself independently, free from outside control, while cooperating with other churches in mission and fellowship.

  5. Religious Liberty and Soul Freedom
Baptists strongly uphold freedom of religion and the right of every individual to interpret Scripture and respond to God without coercion .

OUR VISION

We're a diverse community seeking to be disciples and make disciples of Christ, in an authentic community for the good of the world.
